HSBC in the Community

HSBC has long recognised that, with success, comes a responsibility to give something back to the wider community. There is nothing new in this. Sharing our success is a deeply ingrained part of the HSBC tradition. We do it because we want to, because it is expected of us and because, quite simply, it is the right thing to do.

Whilst we recognize that we can always do more, we believe HSBC has a good story to tell.

We have been making financial donations to good causes throughout our history. Just as important, and often more so, our staff have long given generously of their time, energy and expertise to charitable organisations around the world. In recent years, HSBC has focused its community support on two particular areas: on education, particularly primary and secondary education for the disadvantaged, and on the environment.

HSBC's Youth Excellence Initiatives, scholarships, and support of the National Youth Achievement Award Council have been invaluable in furthering the development of many talented young Singaporeans.

The Singapore Ministry of Environment's Green Leaf Award is amongst the many awards HSBC has won for its Care-for-Nature programmes. The naming of the Vanda HSBC Orchid in 2000 was yet another notable commemoration of HSBC's public service contributions.

The combined efforts of our Care-for-Community programme volunteers also earned numerous awards, one of which was the 2002 Outstanding Global Community-Building Project Award from United Way International (UWI), an independent not-for-profit organisation, recognising the programme for innovation and for its success in making a measurable difference in the community.
