HSBC Visa Platinum Debit Card

As a measure to enhance card security, HSBC will be replacing all MasterCard Electronic debit cards with an EMV chip Visa Platinum debit card.

EMV chip cards are safer than magnetic stripe cards and are less susceptible to card cloning due to the microprocessor chip embedded in the card that uses cryptographic encryption to prevent its contents from being replicated.

Issuance of the new Visa Platinum debit card will start on 1 September 2010 to all new HSBC customers. Existing cardholders of the MasterCard Electronic debit card will receive their new Visa Platinum debit card between 1 November 2010 and 31 January 2011.
